YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS, CONCISE MEDIA EDITION, Sixth Edition, provides students with an intelligent introduction to the basic skills and strategies that they can use to succeed in college. Both academic and social/behavioral skills are explored in this useful tool that will help students achieve and employ strategies. A Student CD-ROM is packaged with every new copy of the text. The book/CD-ROM combination provides a variety of assessments and exercises that will give the student hands-on opportunities for self-assessment and exploration. We adopted Gardner's text mainly because of its concise version. I also have utmost confidence in John Gardner to write a good, solid text - his research on first-year students and his expertise and experience more than qualify him. I don't know of any areas where it really falls short. The additional 'features' make this text outstanding. In particular, the self-assessment, the chapter exercises, and 'your personal journal' are especially helpful. The main reason I am using this text is because it is simply the best college experience/survival skills book in print (and I review each and every one). All the chapters are exemplary. I am most impressed with all the resources available and ideas on how to teach it. If a teacher will spend the time to become familiar with the text and all supporting material, we could be effective in reducing the dropout rate.I am pleased with the way the topics are organized. I like how the first chapter sells college in general as well as the need for a Student Success course. This really builds motivation.Part 1: GET READY (THE BASICS). Introduction. Strategies for Success. 1. Managing Your Time. 2. Discovering How You Learn. Part 2: GET SET (STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!). 3. Thinking Critically, Learning Actively. 4. Listening, Note Taking, and Participating. 5. Reading and Remembering. 6. Taking Tests. Part 3: GO (THE EXTRA MILE). 7. Developing Values. 8. Exploring Course
